GLA Honorees 2015Congratulations to the Glendale Latino Association 2015 Honorees! On February 26th, 2015, at Oakmont Country Club, GLA presented the 2015 Community Awards to the following members:

Woman of the Year: Toni Beck Espinoza
The Stone-Beck Group at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, Senior Vice President

One of the Stone-Beck Group’s principal advisors, Toni brings more than 30 years of experience to the service of her clients. As a Certified Financial Planner, she offers guidance that goes far beyond investing to include estate planning, retirement planning, lending and philanthropic giving. She has compiled extensive experience advising not only individuals and their families, but foundations, endowments, corporate pension plans and other institutions.

A native of Racine, Wisconsin, Toni actually began her financial services career while still in high school. She worked part-time at a local bank until graduating from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in social work. Her subsequent years as a social worker have provided her with empathy for her clients and a deep understanding of the psychological aspects of saving, spending and investing.

Toni moved to California in 1986 and decided to rejoin the financial services industry. After working her way up to operations manager at a Glendale bank, she joined Morgan Stanley and quickly realized her true calling. Her passion for helping people is also reflected by her extensive community involvement. As Vice President of the Kiwanis Club of Glendale, Toni chaired a number of committees and was voted 2009 Kiwanian of the Year.  She and her husband, Vince, were also recognized by Glendale Kiwanis in 2013 when they received the Distinguished Service Award.

Toni has also served as a board member and Treasurer for the YWCA of Glendale and the Character and Ethics Project, an organization which promotes character and ethical behavior in the schools, business and the community.   She was recognized in 2013 by the YWCA of Glendale as a “Woman of Heart and Excellence”.

Toni sits on the board for the Community Foundation of the Verdugos, which links donors to needed services in the community.  She is an active member of the organization’s scholarship committee.  In addition, she is Vice President of Marketing for the Glendale Educational Foundation.  She served as Treasurer for two years for the organization as well.  Music and music education is one of Toni’s passions and she serves in her capacity as Vice President for the Arturo Sandoval Institute (ASI).  The Institute’s mission is to educate, support and inspire music students to continue music education without regard to their economic circumstances.

Toni lives in La Crescenta with her husband Vince.  Their son, Vinny, is studying business at California State University Los Angeles, while his brother, Jake, attends Arizona State University and is also studying business.  Toni and Vince like to spend time with family and friends in California’s central coast or the mountains.  She enjoys scuba diving, snow skiing, camping and wine tasting.  She also enjoys cheering on her beloved Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers!

Man of the Year: Harold D. Scoggins
Glendale Fire Department, Fire Chief

Fire Chief Scoggins joined the Glendale Fire Department in 1989, as a Firefighter.  He has been with the department for 25 years and has served in diverse positions and assignments.  Since May 2008, Chief Scoggins has served as the Fire Chief.

Chief Scoggins holds an Associate of Science degree in Fire Technology from Glendale Community College; a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Administration from Cal State University at Los Angeles and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Cal State University at Long Beach.

During his employment with the GFD, Chief Scoggins has worked in all aspects of the department, including assignments and supervision of the Mechanical Maintenance Section, the Warehouse, Verdugo Communications Section, Training and Safety, Operations and Fire Prevention.  He also served on the Glendale Firefighters Board of Directors as well as the Glendale Managers Association Board of Directors.  Chief Scoggins has been a part of many different projects and programs in the GFD, but one of the ones he is most proud of is the Christmas aid program for the under privileged in the Glendale Community that he started when he was a firefighter.

Harold is and has been involved in a number of community organizations such as; the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, American Red Cross board member, Glendale Youth Alliance board member, Salvation Army board member, Glendale Memorial Hospital Community Board, past Glendale Adventist Medical Center Advisory board member and is a proud Rotarian.

Chief Scoggins is also the past President of the Los Angeles Area Fire Chief’s Association and current executive board member and is the current Area 2 representative for the California Fire Chiefs Association.

Chief Scoggins has also stayed involved in his community coaching youth basketball and football, and he currently serve as the President of the West Covina Bruins Junior All American Football and Cheer program that serves almost 300 kids annually.

Chief Scoggins is married to his beautiful wife Abigail and has four children (Anthony, 26, Jasmine 23, Nicole 14 and Isaiah 12).
