Liseth Mazariegos brought her daughter, Maria Galvez, to the U.S. from Guatemala when Maria was just a baby.
Now Maria is 17, about to graduate from Glendale High School with a 4.0 grade-point average, and headed to UC Merced to study child development in the fall. She was one of 16 local high school seniors honored Thursday with a scholarship.
For Mazariegos, seeing her daughter get this far was an affirmation of her decision to immigrate. “We came thinking about doing something good in this country, and she did it,” Mazariegos said.
The Glendale Latino Assn. awarded the 16 seniors — who are from public and private schools in Glendale and La Crescenta — with a total of $12,000 in scholarships during an awards ceremony at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club.
“It’s a motivation for the students,” said Mercy Velazquez, president of the association.
The scholarships also serve to bring the community together to support Latino students seeking a higher education, she said.
“Let’s motivate the students to study,” she said. “And let’s put the awareness on the community to help these students.”
The association raises the funds for the annual scholarships through its business networking events and through sponsorships from businesses and individuals, Velazquez said.
The Glendale Latino Assn. is a networking organization for Latino professionals in Glendale that also seeks to increase access to higher education for local Latino students.
Glendale Unified School District Supt. Michael Escalante gave the keynote speech at the event, telling students that success is determined more by hard work than by natural talent. He encouraged the students to be persistent and disciplined in their approach to academics and careers.
“Greatness is not handed to anyone. It requires a lot of hard work,” he said.
Amy Navarrete, vice president of the association, handed out certificates to the students and told the audience a bit about each scholar’s accomplishments.
The winners have been accepted at a variety of universities; most planned to attend schools in the California State or University of California system. Their tentative majors ranged from law to social work to astronomy.
“As you can see, these are amazing, excelling scholars,” Navarrete said.
Maria thinks the scholarships give Latino students a chance to shine.
“I think it’s really great,” she said. “Students who’ve worked hard are finally being recognized.”
Jaime Saavedra, a senior at Clark Magnet High School, said his scholarship would give him a financial boost as he gears up to study at Cal State L.A. Saavedra plans to major in psychology and become a school counselor.
“This will be an incredible help for me to finally achieve my goals,” he said.
