We recieved a few letters and cards from some of the schools and recipients of the GLA Scholarship Awards. The winners were previously listed and can be seen below today's update. Also, be sure to check out the Upcoming Events page and come and join us at our next gatherings.



2007 Scholarship Awards Breakfast
Held Wednesday, May 23, 2007
Crescenta Valley High School
1) Christiane Gomez
Our first recipient is a senior at Crescenta Valley High School and has a 3.77 GPA. She is a finalist in Senator Adam Schiff's Are Competition and volunteers during the summer as a Jr. Counselor for a children's camp. She will be attending Cal State Northridge in the Fall in the Honors Program. She hopes to transfer to USC Film School to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a Film Director.
2) Desiree Jerez
Our nextt recipient is also a senior at Crescenta Valley High School with a 3.9 GPA. She has enjoyed volunteering the last four years as a teacher's assistant at Mayberry School. It is her love of children and experience working with them that has inspired her to study Psychology and Education at Loyala Marymount University this Fall.
Glendale Community College
3) Luz Ramirez
Is an active student at Glendale Community College. As a member of the AG Sorority, she has enjoyed volunteering at numerous community events, including clean-up days. She also helped form the Cinema Club at GCC, which hosts very well-attended movie screenings on campus. She hopes to become an English Literature Professor and would love to write a book someday. She will be transferring to UCLA this fall.
4)Norma Rojas
Our next recipient is a nursing student at Glendale Community College. She will complete the nursing program this December. She is an active member of SALEF's Health Advisory Committee, organizing health fairs throughout underserved communities. She also manages to find time to mentor two students weekly from Belmont High School. She recently was asked to be panelist at the Hispanic Heritage Conference in Washington D.C. to share her thoughts on being a Latina student in college. She hopes to get her Masters and become a nurse practitioner and open her own clinic someday. She also dreams of starting a non-profit organization to provide medical care to underprivileged children here, in Mexico, and El Salvador where her family is from.
5) Erick Santos
Erick has been an active member of GCC's ASB. He was named the 2006 GCC Man of the Year by his peers for his exceptional community service, including leading students to raise $6,000 for Hurricane Katrina victims. He has recently been accepted to UCI and UCLA. He will study Biology and is seriously contemplating going onto Medical School or becoming a professor of Biology.
Glendale High School
6)Yared Montavlo-Montano
Yared is a senior at Glendale High School. He is the Captain of the Volleyball team and Vice President of the school's Habitat for Humanity Club. He and the club have helped create homes for numerous, needy families in Glendale and throughout Southern California. Like many students, though Yared has the grades and has been accepted to four year universities. To save money he has accepted opted to attend community college first and then transfer to Cal Poly Pomona in a year or two to study Restaurant and Hotel Management.
Holy Family High School
7)Aksana Guzman
Aksana is a senior at Holy Family High School. She volunteers during the summer at Catholic Charities and is currently an intern at Washington Mutual. Impressed with her work, Washington Mutual has offered her a position as soon as she earns her high school diploma. She will attend CSUN in the fall and will study Business. She later hopes to earn her MBA and become a Bank Regional Manager.
Hoover High School
8) Alejandro Hernandez
Alejandro is a senior at Hoover High School. His talents and interests are very diverse. He is a member of the Water Polo team and is also part of the Hoover H.S. Jazz ensemble, which performs throughout California at various music competitions. Like Yared, he will attend PCC this fall to save money. He hopes to transfer to USC to study business and marketing and become a Recording Industry Executive.
9)Jessica Olivias
Our last recipient is also a senior at Hoover High School. She volunteers on various community projects, including tutoring and mentoring students at Toll, all while maintaining an impressive 4.38 GPA. She has been accepted to attend USC and Notre Dame. She will study business and will then pursue a MBA from USC.
